Bali vs Rishikesh: Which yoga destination is right for you?

25 May 2026 8 min readBy Sofia Reyes

Two cities. One mission: become a better version of yourself. But Bali and Rishikesh will take you there by very different roads.

Rishikesh: The source

Rishikesh is where Swami Sivananda established the Divine Life Society in 1936. It is where The Beatles came in 1968 and where the world's yoga infrastructure originated. The Ganges flows fast and cold through the town. The Himalayas frame every view. Ashrams have operated continuously for over a century.

The vibe is austere, disciplined, ancient. 5am bells wake you for morning practice. Meals are simple. The focus is inward. Students who come here for the aesthetics of Instagram often find it confronting.

Rishikesh is best for: those seeking classical yoga training (particularly Hatha, Ashtanga and Iyengar lineages), those interested in serious pranayama and meditation practice, and those who want to understand yoga in its cultural context.

Bali: The destination

Ubud specifically — Bali's spiritual and cultural heartland — has become the world's most popular wellness destination. It is lush, beautiful, social and deeply Balinese-Hindu. Ceremonies happen daily. Offerings are laid at every doorstep.

The yoga scene is world-class and diverse. Yoga Barn alone offers over 100 classes per week. Infrastructure is excellent, food is extraordinary, and the community of long-term wellness practitioners is the most international in the world.

Bali is best for: those new to retreat travel, those seeking a balance of practice and experience, those who want to combine yoga with other wellness modalities (sound healing, cacao ceremony, ecstatic dance), and those who value community alongside depth.

Cost comparison

Rishikesh: A good 200-hour teacher training runs $800–$1,400 including accommodation and meals. Daily life in Rishikesh is inexpensive by any standard.

Bali: A comparable training runs $1,800–$2,800. Daily life is more expensive and the temptation to spend is greater. Budget accordingly.

The verdict

There is no better destination. There is the one that is right for you, right now. If you want initiation into the tradition: Rishikesh. If you want immersion with full amenities: Bali. If possible: do both.
